Adam & Steve (2005)
Plot Summary: Raucously funny and sweetly romantic, Adam & Steve is a twisted, tender comedy that would surely make John Waters cackle with glee (L.A. Weekly). In the 1980s, Adam (writer/director Craig Chester) and Steve (Malcolm Gets, TV s Caroline in the City ) had a horrifically embarrassing one night stand. When they meet again years later, they fail to recognize each other and fall in love as do their wisecracking best friends (Parker Posey, Superman Returns, Best in Show and Chris Kattan, TV s Saturday Night Live ). Honest, irreverent and a whole lot of fun, Adam & Steve is all about making love work whatever the odds.

Come Undone [Region 2]
Plot Summary: An emotionally subtle film with some surprisingly graphic sex, Come Undone follows 18-year-old Mathieu (Jeremie Elkaim) as he goes on holiday with his depressed mother, her cranky caretaker, and Mathieu's resentful younger sister. At the beach, Mathieu meets Cédric (Stéphane Rideau), a handsome teenager with whom he begins a romance after a kiss in the moonlight. Their relationship is threatened by Mathieu's fears of how his family will react and by a violent former lover of Cédric's, but ultimately is brought to an end by something else entirely. Come Undone shifts fluidly back and forth in time and can be confusing, but by the end it's an affecting portrait of both love and melancholy. Some will find the movie worth seeing just for the many shots of the extremely attractive naked actors romping on the beach. --Bret Fetzer

Curiosity of Chance, The
Plot Summary: It's the 80s once again, and the John Hughes-styled high school comedy gets a fresh twist in this touching, coming-of-age tale. New wave angst and gender-bending fashion are all the rage, but the new kid at school, Chance Marquis (Tad Hilgenbrinck of American Pie Presents: Band Camp) is trying to find new ways to stand out. Being an odd and somewhat awkward teenager makes him the target of the school bully. To deal with this dilemma, Chance turns to the opposite ends of the high school spectrum for help. On one side is the flamboyant drag queen and on the other, the varsity jock, Levi Sparks (Brett Chukerman of Eating Out 2) with whom Chance develops a unique friendship. Chock-full of the comic conventions of the high school genre the idiot faculty, the good-hearted but delusional parents, the fairy tale reversal of popularity The Curiosity of Chance is a frothy bit of nostalgic filmmaking. But knowing the genre doesn t mean its story won t also touch your heart, as Chance battles the bigots to make high school the diverse utopia it should have always been.

Edge of Seventeen
Plot Summary: Set in 1984 in Sandusky, Ohio, "Edge of Seventeen" follows the coming-out of a naive 17-year-old teenager at exactly the moment when gender-bending pop stars like Boy George and Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics were flaunting androgynous images. As the youth, played with a heartbreaking sweetness by Chris Stafford, goes through his first rites of gay passage (after being callously used by the slightly older boy who brings him out, he tries to retreat to heterosexuality with his closest female friend) he emerges as a poignant gay everyman. Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles
Plot Summary: When it was announced that Tom Cruise would play the vampire Lestat in this adaptation of Anne Rice's bestselling novel, even Rice chimed in with a highly publicized objection. The author wisely and justifiably recanted her negative opinion when she saw Cruise's excellent performance, which perceptively addresses the pain and chronic melancholy that plagues anyone cursed with immortal bloodlust. Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst are equally good at maintaining the dark and brooding tone of Rice's novel. And in this rare mainstream project for a major studio, director Neil Jordan compensates for a lumbering plot by honoring the literate, Romantic qualities of Rice's screenplay. Considered a disappointment while being embraced by Rice's loyal followers, the movie is too slow to be a satisfying thriller, but it is definitely one of the most lavish, intelligent horror films ever made. --Jeff Shannon

Maurice - The Merchant Ivory Collection
Plot Summary: Set against the stifling conformity of pre-World War I English society, E.M. Forster’s Maurice is a story of coming to terms with one’s sexuality and identity in the face of disapproval and misunderstanding. Maurice Hall (James Wilby) and Clive Durham (Hugh Grant) find themselves in love at Cambridge. In a time when homosexuality was punishable by imprisonment, the two must keep their feelings for one another a complete secret, even though Clive refuses to allow their relationship to move beyond the boundaries of "platonic" love. After a friend is arrested and disgraced for "the unspeakable crime of the Greeks," Clive abandons his forbidden love, marries, and enters into the political arena. Maurice, however, struggles with questions of his identity and self-confidence, even seeking the help of a hypnotist to rid himself of his undeniable urges. But while staying with Clive and his shallow wife, Anne, Maurice is seduced by the affectionate and yearning servant Alec Scudder, (Rupert Graves), an event that brings about profound changes in Maurice’s life and outlook. Sparking direction by James Ivory, a distinguished performance from the ensemble cast, and a charged score by Richard Robbins all combine to create a film of undeniable power, one that is both romantic and moving, and a story of love and self-discovery for all audiences.

My Own Private Idaho
Plot Summary: Gus Van Sant's often-beautiful 1991 film stars River Phoenix as a narcoleptic, Seattle male prostitute and Keanu Reeves as the rich friend who agrees to help him find his mother. After a solid hour or so of the two traveling on this quest through Idaho and Italy, Van Sant throws a wrench into the works by conjuring a gay version of Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part I, with Reeves's character as Prince Hal and filmmaker William Richert (who directed Phoenix in the 1988 Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon) as a variation on Falstaff. The experiment is interesting to watch, but you can't help wondering what on earth happened to the movie. Still, the film has a cult status one can't argue with, and Phoenix gives a tragic performance that stays in the memory. --Tom Keogh

Mysterious Skin (Original Theatrical Director's Cut)
Plot Summary: Though the subject matter of Mysterious Skin is as sensational as that of Gregg Araki's other films (such as Totally F***ked Up, The Doom Generation, or The Living End), his direction is richer and more multilayered than ever before. Two Kansas teenagers named Neil (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 10 Things I Hate About You) and Brian (Brady Corbett, Thirteen) share a childhood trauma--but their responses are radically different: Neil hustles tricks, while Brady, who can't remember what happened, believes he was abducted by aliens and left with "missing time." As both try to make sense of their lives and Brian struggles to find out the truth, Mysterious Skin builds to an emotional pitch that some viewers will find uncomfortable and others will find liberating. The characters of Neil and Brian have a fullness that lifts Mysterious Skin above most examinations of sexual abuse and trauma. Gordon-Levitt has been deservedly praised by the critics, but the entire cast--which also includes Bill Sage (Simple Men), Elizabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas), Michelle Trachtenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and Mary Lynn Rajskub (24)--turns in superb performances. A striking and powerful movie. --Bret Fetzer
